The Friend by Sigrid Nunez

I love stories about dogs and human love for dogs. And I love stories about single women. This book is the 2018 National Book Award winner for Fiction for good reason. Nunez has a distinct writing style in this novel, where all characters go unnamed except for the dog around which the book revolves. It almost seems as though you are reading a diary, or a polished collection of thoughts. The book also has heavy themes of depression and general mental health. It’s very relatable and human and real, and it is also a must-read.
